As I expand my follower base on Twitter, I am beginning to communicate with people previously unknown to me. This really came in handy when asking for a suggestion on how to combat all the spam at my blog’s floodgates.
Martin Malden (@abledragon) offered a one-two combo of Wordpress plugins Akismet and Bad Behavior. “WP-SpamFree” (@WPSpamFree) found my tweet in a search, followed me then sent me a direct message asking if I needed help. In the end, my good friend Brian Shih (@bshih) reminded me of SpamKarma, the awesome took he used when working on the group blog AlwaysBeta.
Although the number of responses was small, each one was very timely and an excellent suggestion. It proved the potential utility of Twitter to me. As the number of my followers continues to grow, I’m eager to communicate with more people in a similar fashion. This is a truly exciting new method of real-time communication.
